A Day in the Life of...

Families and Holidays

Families can come in all different shapes and sizes. There is a variety of backgrounds among our students here in this classroom. Nobody in this classroom was born in a different country, but there are eight people who parents were born in different countries.

Also there are three people who speak another language besides English. Some of the different nationalities which are in our class are: Italians, Jamaicans, and Hispanics. Members of this class come from many different backgrounds and each has some special traditions even while we have much in common.

Our entire school is one big family with all kinds of ethnicity and different ways of doing things. We are all proud of our backgrounds and our ethnic heritages.

Are there any multicultural people in your class? What kind of different nationalities are in your class? Is anyone in your class bilingual? What kind of traditions do some of the students have?

America has a lot of  holidays; some are national holidays and some are religious holidays.   Some are fun while others have a special and deeper meaning. These are just a few.

Christmas- December 25- This is the day Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.

Thanksgiving -the fourth Thursday of every November. This celebrates the harvest festival the early Pilgrims had after a year of surviving the new world of the Plymouth Colony. It was held in 1621.

Halloween- October 31: Children dress up as a favorite character (TV characters, celebrities, vampires, werewolves, etc.) and go door to door  in their neighborhood to collect candy of all sorts. IN the past few years, families or schools hold a party on this day instead of letting children go out at night.

American Independence Day- July 4:   This is the day we celebrate the signing and reading of the Declaration on Independence in 1776. The Declaration declared our independence from England

Memorial Day- Last Monday in May:  This is one of the days dedicated to
remembering fallen soldiers who died in battle, protecting our country.

Hip-hop
Hip hop is a broad union of artistic forms that originated in the South Bronx and quickly spread through other parts of New York City such as Harlem among African American and youth from the Caribbean during the 1980s. It is characterized by four different segments, each one represents the different display of the culture: rap music (oral), turntablism or "DJing" (aural), breaking (physical) and graffiti art (visual). Even while it continues in modern history to develop globally in a thriving multitude of diverse styles, these foundational segments provide stability and unity to the culture.

Rap
Rapping (or spitting bars) is spoken in rhyming lyrics. The elements of rapping include content, and flow. Rapping is distinct from spoken word poetry in that it is performed in time to a beat. Rapping is often linked with and a predominant portion of hip hop music, but the origins of the phenomenon can be said to predate hip hop culture by centuries.

Gospel

Gospel music comes from African American religious experience and can be traced back to the 17th century. Gospel music usually uses an abundant amount of repetition. The repetition gave way for those who could not read a chance to take part in worship. In the midst of this time, hymns and sacred songs were lined and replicated in a call and response order, and the Negro spirituals and work songs came on the scene. Repeating of words and "call and response" are approved aspects in African music, arranged to achieve an adapted state of consciousness sometimes call "trance," strengthen a collective chain.

The forbearers of R&B came from jazz and blues, which overplayed in the late 1920's, 1930's came Through the work of musicians like The Harlem Hamfats, with their 1936 hit "Oh Red." There were also growing importance on the electric guitar as being the lead instrument, including the piano and saxophone.

THE FRANKLIN INSTITUTE: The Franklin Institute is a science museum and center of science education and research in Philadelphia. It is named in honor of the noted American scientist and statesman Benjamin Franklin, and houses theBenjamin Franklin National Memorial. Founded in 1824, the Franklin Institute is one of the oldest centers of science education and development in the United States. Many of us have been there with our families and with our schools on field trips. It is a fun and interesting way to learn about science and their special shows attract so many people that you have to make reservations.

The LIBERTY BELL, one of America's most treasured artifacts, first tolled on July 8, 1776, announcing a new birth of freedom throughout the land. Since then, it has endured as a symbol of the liberty that Americans enjoy under their representative form of government. The bell was soon used to call people's attention to important events and announcements, such as the 1761 announcement of King George III as ruler of Great Britain, the repeal of the Sugar Act of 1764, and the calling of meetings to discuss the Stamp Act of 1765. Other famous tollings announced the calling of the Continental Congress, the beginning of the Revolutionary War, and the announcement of the Declaration of Independence. This last, the most famous ringing, occurred on July 8, 1776, at the first public reading of the Declaration.
The bell was removed from the city for safety in 1777. It was brought back  to Philadelphia in 1778 but not rehung because the state house steeple, badly in need of repairs, couldn't hold it. The bell was finally rehung in 1785, when the steeple was rebuilt, and it tolled in 1787 to announce the ratification of the Constitution.

The bell continued to toll to commemorate special days, like the 4th of July and George Washington's birthday, February 22. It is generally believed that the bell cracked for good on Washington's birthday, 1846.

A book that is popular here:

The Fault in our Stars came out on January 10, 2012 and it was the most popular book out. Everyone loved the book because of the story. The story is about two teenagers hazel grace and Augustus waters who just met and it's love at first sight. Even though they both have cancer they stay strong and fight through it, and their world might be crumbling down but they don't let anything bother them, or tear them apart. At the the end of the book Augustus passes away, but his soul is still with hazel. That is why the book is super popular, and teenagers like us can relate to it.

    The Fault In Our Stars

Seventeen-year-old Hazel Grace attends a cancer patients' support group at her mothers request. In one of the meetings she sees An attractive teenage boy, and through the time of the meeting she learns the boy’s name is Augustus Waters. He's there to support their friend, Isaac. After the meeting ends, Augustus invites Hazel to his house to watch a movie, and while hanging out they shared their cancer stories. Augustus has been cancer free for years while Hazel is fighting with thyroid cancer. And near the end of their hangout Augusts agrees to read Hazeld favorite book "The Meaning Of An Imperial Affliction." After Hazel and Augustus discuss the literary meaning of An Imperial Affliction, Augustus tells her that he tracked down Van Houten's assistant, Lidewij, and through her he's managed to start an email conversation with the author. He shares Van Houten's letter with Hazel, and she makes a list of questions to send Van Houten, hoping to clear up the novel’s conclusion. Van Houten later replies, saying he could only answer Hazel’s questions in person. He invites her to stop by in Amsterdam. They both go to Amsterdam and there Augustus reveals that he is dying and his cancer came back, shortly after they get back from Amsterdam, Augustus dies.

Another book that is popular here:

Over the summer there was a variety of books that could have been chosen for our summer reading. While reviewing all of the titles; one of the titles that caught my eye  was The Shack.

The Shack was an outstanding book about trusting in God and trying to do the right thing. The book was about a man named Mack, who lost his youngest daughter Missy, to a serial killer. The book is about God coming to a Shack to meet with Mack and to try and help him get threw this rough period of time. God was there to help Mack forgive the man who killed his daughter. As the book ends the killer is found along with the remains of Missy and the other little girls the man has killed. In my opinion, I thought the book was wonderful and the book teaches you to forgive a person no matter what that person has done to you. I would recommend this book to anyone who is going threw a rough time to remind them that God is always with us and will never leave any one of us behind. The people in the book inspire me to be a better person and to always for give and forget.
