A Day in the Life of...

Families and Holidays

Families can come in all different shapes and sizes. There is a variety of backgrounds among our students here in this classroom. Nobody in this classroom was born in a different country, but there are eight people who parents were born in different countries.

Also there are three people who speak another language besides English. Some of the different nationalities which are in our class are: Italians, Jamaicans, and Hispanics. Members of this class come from many different backgrounds and each has some special traditions even while we have much in common.

Our entire school is one big family with all kinds of ethnicity and different ways of doing things. We are all proud of our backgrounds and our ethnic heritages.

Are there any multicultural people in your class? What kind of different nationalities are in your class? Is anyone in your class bilingual? What kind of traditions do some of the students have?

America has a lot of  holidays; some are national holidays and some are religious holidays.   Some are fun while others have a special and deeper meaning. These are just a few.

Christmas- December 25- This is the day Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.

Thanksgiving -the fourth Thursday of every November. This celebrates the harvest festival the early Pilgrims had after a year of surviving the new world of the Plymouth Colony. It was held in 1621.

Halloween- October 31: Children dress up as a favorite character (TV characters, celebrities, vampires, werewolves, etc.) and go door to door  in their neighborhood to collect candy of all sorts. IN the past few years, families or schools hold a party on this day instead of letting children go out at night.

American Independence Day- July 4:   This is the day we celebrate the signing and reading of the Declaration on Independence in 1776. The Declaration declared our independence from England

Memorial Day- Last Monday in May:  This is one of the days dedicated to
remembering fallen soldiers who died in battle, protecting our country.

Hip-hop
Hip hop is a broad union of artistic forms that originated in the South Bronx and quickly spread through other parts of New York City such as Harlem among African American and youth from the Caribbean during the 1980s. It is characterized by four different segments, each one represents the different display of the culture: rap music (oral), turntablism or "DJing" (aural), breaking (physical) and graffiti art (visual). Even while it continues in modern history to develop globally in a thriving multitude of diverse styles, these foundational segments provide stability and unity to the culture.

Rap
Rapping (or spitting bars) is spoken in rhyming lyrics. The elements of rapping include content, and flow. Rapping is distinct from spoken word poetry in that it is performed in time to a beat. Rapping is often linked with and a predominant portion of hip hop music, but the origins of the phenomenon can be said to predate hip hop culture by centuries.

Gospel

Gospel music comes from African American religious experience and can be traced back to the 17th century. Gospel music usually uses an abundant amount of repetition. The repetition gave way for those who could not read a chance to take part in worship.
