Our School
HISTORY OF OUR SCHOOL
In 1850 Christopher Fallon built a mansion known as "Runnymede" on our grounds. In 1882, the building was bought by Colonel Anthony Drexel. The mansion stood on what was called "The Hill of Drexel" and our surrounding area became known as Drexel Hill because of this. In 1908 the mansion burnt down completely and only the gatehouse (which still stands) was left. In 1917 Archbishop Edmond Prendergast purchased the land (33 acres) and announced that he would be constructing an orphanage called "St Vincent's Orphanage" on the grounds where the mansion once stood.
From 1920 through 1952, St. Vincent's remained open. It was closed after thirty years since it was no longer needed as an orphanage. St. Vincent's became Archbishop Prendergast School for Boys. Three years later a newer school was built nearby and called Monsignor Bonner. Bonner was designated for the boys and Prendergast (Prendie) for the girls. The two schools served thousands of students for over 50 years as independent schools. About four years ago, Archbishop Charles Chaput announced that Bonner (boys) and Prendie (girls) would be closing along with some other high schools. On February 24th, 2012, he announced that all four high schools, including ours, would remain open. Both buildings could not be maintained, however, so the students, parents, alumni and the Bonner and Prendie community worked to combine our two buildings into one. The magnificent Prendergast building was hard to maintain so we went together in the Bonner building which is now for boys and girls. We now call this school Monsignor Bonner and Archbishop Prendergast Catholic High School! (MBPACHS) We believe this was a major success and great idea. Our community is still alive and becoming stronger each and every year. Also, the number of students increases each year which is a great thing.

Members also did a reverent strong demonstration by standing along major roads with signs that expressed Choose Life! On Thanksgiving Day our members went to a local nursing home and helped to serve dinner to the residents. There are many more activities planned.
We have many more activities for students and will add to this post.

Classroom Culture
We took a survey of the students in our class to see what their ethnic backgrounds are. There are many nationalities represented. Some of our students have families who have been in the country for generations. Some have families who have arrived recently. And some of us were born in other countries came here very recently.
Many of us speak two languages but most of us speak English as our primary language. In school we are learning French or Spanish. But for some of us are learning English as our second language.

Families and Holidays
Families can come in all different shapes and sizes. There is a variety of backgrounds among our students here in this classroom. Nobody in this classroom was born in a different country, but there are eight people who parents were born in different countries.
Also there are three people who speak another language besides English. Some of the different nationalities which are in our class are: Italians, Jamaicans, and Hispanics. Members of this class come from many different backgrounds and each has some special traditions even while we have much in common.
Our entire school is one big family with all kinds of ethnicity and different ways of doing things. We are all proud of our backgrounds and our ethnic heritages.
America has a lot of holidays; some are national holidays and some are religious holidays. Some are fun while others have a special and deeper meaning. These are just a few.
Christmas- December 25: - This is the day Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.
Thanksgiving -the fourth Thursday of every November. This celebrates the harvest festival the early Pilgrims had after a year of surviving the new world of the Plymouth Colony. It was held in 1621.
Halloween- October 31: Children dress up as a favorite character (TV characters, celebrities, vampires, werewolves, etc.) and go door to door in their neighborhood to collect candy of all sorts. IN the past few years, families or schools hold a party on this day instead of letting children go out at night.
American Independence Day- July 4: This is the day we celebrate the signing and reading of the Declaration on Independence in 1776. The Declaration declared our independence from England
Memorial Day- Last Monday in May: This is one of the days dedicated to
remembering fallen soldiers who died in battle, protecting our country.
Labor Day- the first Monday of September: - This holiday is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers.
Hanukkah- This eight- day Jewish holiday is celebrated in December
Our school might be in Pennsylvania but we travel to many different states
to have a good time. Most of these places are best in the summer, except
the Pocono Mountains.
Vacation Places
Delaware- known as the "First State"- If you go here on vacation, the
Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk is huge attraction. There are many other popular beach areas here
Virginia- known as the "Old Dominion"- s|Some attractions in Virginia are:
Busch Gardens Amusement park, water Country Water Park, Colonial Williamsburg, and Virginia Beach.
New Jersey- Some of the famous attractions in New Jersey are Atlantic City,
Sea Isle City, and Six Flags Amusement Park and many other popular seashore towns
.
Pocono Mountains- A place in upper Pennsylvania where you can go skiing and
snowboarding.

Are there any multicultural people in your class? What kind of different nationalities are in your class? Is anyone in your class bilingual? What kind of traditions do some of the students have?

Hip-hop
Hip hop is a broad union of artistic forms that
originated in the South Bronx
and quickly spread through other parts of New York City such as Harlem among
African American and youth
from the Caribbean during the 1980s. It is characterized by four different segments, each one represents the different display of the culture: rap music (oral), turntablism or "DJing" (aural), breaking (physical) and graffiti art (visual). Even while it continues in modern history to develop globally in
a thriving multitude of
diverse styles, these foundational segments provide stability and unity to the culture.

Rap
Rapping (or spitting bars) is spoken in rhyming lyrics. The elements of
rapping include content, and flow. Rapping is
distinct from spoken word poetry in that it is performed in time to a beat.
Rapping is often linked with and a predominant portion of hip hop music, but the origins of the phenomenon can
be said to predate hip hop culture by centuries.

Gospel
Gospel
Gospel music comes from African American religious experience and can be traced back to the 17th century. Gospel music usually uses an abundant amount of repetition. The repetition gave way for those who could not read a chance to take part in worship. In the midst of this time, hymns and sacred songs were lined and replicated in a call and response order, and the Negro spirituals and work songs came on the scene. Repeating of words and "call and response" are approved aspects in African music, arranged to achieve an adapted state of consciousness sometimes call "trance," strengthen a collective chain.
